Police stop Dino Melaye’s Abuja programme


ABUJA — THE police in Abuja, yesterday, stopped the much-publicised colloquium organised by Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, Otunba Dino Melaye from holding .The fierce-looking and heavily-armed police officers, purportedly on the orders of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, stormed Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja, venue of the colloquium on Freedom of Information Act 2011 (FoI) and sealed off the building.No reason was given by the police authorities for the action.The police personnel who were over 50 in number, and led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, ASP, who could not disclose his identity, sealed the building around 9:30 am, thus, preventing all invited guest and dignitaries from attending the occasion.Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, the Senate President, David Mark as well as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, whose protocol officers were already on ground for the event, got the signal and stayed off from the event.Foremost lawyer and human rights campaigner, Femi Falana, Balarabe Musa, el-Rufai, Audu Ogbeh, Gen. Ahmed Aboki (rtd), Director-General of National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mike Omeri, representatives of the Minister of Justice, chairman of ICPC, EFCC, para-military organisations, resources person drawn from the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa, among others were all billed to attend the controversial occasion.
